With the exception of the last two years, I have styled my hair straight for the majority of my life, so most people don’t know that I have naturally curly, wavy hair. It is not straight at all. It is frizzy and just curls up at the sign of humidity. However, living in a warm, humid environment my whole life has also taught me how to get perfect straight hair with the Revlon 1.5″ Smooth Brilliance Flat Iron even in high humidity.
My tips have been a culmination from high school and college striving to get that perfect straight hair look. It has taken a lot of practice and trying out a ton of different products. I can finally say that I have mastered the art of not only straightening my hair, but making it last on hot and humid summer days.
And, let me remind that my natural hair is very curly, wavy and thick so if I can pull this off – it is very doable for most hair types! Keep in mind, this look does not have to break the bank either – the Revlon 1.5″ Smooth Brilliance Flat Iron is VERY affordable and works fantastic!
1. Start in the Shower
Unless you were born with extremely straight hair naturally, then most likely it requires a lot of heat from blow dryers and straighteners for you to achieve straight hair. This can be very damaging to your hair which can also effect the overall look of your “straight” hair. I combat this in the shower by treating my hair with a really good shampoo and conditioner. I also only wash my hair every other day to decrease the amount of heat that is applied to my hair.
2. Find THE Straightening Balm
This is what took me years and years to find. I have an amazing straightening balm product that I swear by – it works wonders you guys. While I don’t profess to know much about beauty products, hair products are a different story. I have tried a ton of products on the market and I highly advise trying several to find the best straightening balm for your hair type specifically.
3. Blow Dry Completely
This is key if you live in a humid climate. I dry my hair 90-95% before using my flat iron. This way, it is completely dry before I step out into the humid air. For me, I try to blow dry my hair straight by using a brush to comb it throughout the process. However, my hair is still very wavy after the blow drying process.
4. Use a Revlon 1.5″ Smooth Brilliance Flat Iron
This gem retails at $34.99 (you can grab one at Ulta) and its all you need! It is the latest addition to the Revlon Perfect Heat Straightener collection and is truly the best in its class. It works great on my long, thick hair and glides right through giving me smooth, straight and shiny results. Not to mention, it boasts an XL Length XL Wide Plate which is great for my thick hair and has helped me cut down on how many sections I use when styling. It also has an Advanced Ionic Tourmaline 3X Ceramic styling surface to smooth, and straighten your hair in just one pass.
5. Protect Your Hair
Again, all of the heat you have to put on your hair in order for it to be perfectly straight is very damaging. Before taking a flat iron to your hair, you should apply a heat protecting spray. THIS STEP IS VITAL to the health of your hair. Most people I know just spray it all over their head and are consider it done. Think again. I highly advise that you should apply it to every single layer of hair that you straighten. I also find that this helps each section have a sleek look. Again, I am very picky about what product I use, it must do its job and smell good.
6. Style in Sections
On to my next point, when I get to the straightening process, I style my hair in sections. I do this in a little different way than most, by going around my head, but its same concept. Also, the curlier your hair, the move sections are needed. It may take you more time to style, but the end result is definitely worth the extra effort!
7. Use The Right Brush
I’m a paddle brush girl – through and through. There is no other. I don’t do round. I don’t do skinny. I am a paddle brush girl. You do you.
8. SEAL THE DEAL
Once you’re happy with your look, lock it in with some anti-humidity hair spray. Plain and simple!
Overall, the key is using the right mix of products, especially the Revlon 1.5″ Smooth Brilliance Flat Iron. If the 1.5″ is a little too wide for you, you might even be interested in Revlon 1” Smooth Brilliance Flat Iron. It is the same great product, just in a different size and lower price point. Also, for my blessed straight hair friends, I have heard the Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Styler is a gem as well!
