I think we have all been there.
I’m not talking about that moment when you look down at your dashboard and panic because your gage is reading well past that little orange E.
I’m talking about life.
You just feel like you’re sitting on E.
Work is dragging you down. You feel worn out at home. Your joy level is down. And, your spiritual tank is just… Empty.
Nothing seems to be going your way. What do you do? How you get full again?
I wish the answer to combat emptiness was easy, but normally, it’s not. It takes persistence, consistency, and obedience just like a lot of things in life.
Persistently focus on THANKFULNESS.
Yes, focus on being thankful. Decide, right now, that you will find the good in your day. You’re stuck in traffic, but at least you get a few moments of alone time. Your boss is on edge, but at least you are employed. You forgot to pick up milk at the grocery store, but at least you have a chance to get creative with dinner now. Find the good. Focus on being thankful.
Consistently PRAY.
Be in consistent in your prayer life. Really pour out your heart to God and let Him in. Tell him your frustrations, share your fears, request change, ask for guidance and remember to be thankful as well for your blessings. Make your prayer life an all-day communication exchange with God.
Obediently WORSHIP.
Every time I step into a sanctuary, I don’t immediately fill full. After every sermon, I don’t leave inspired. I wish I did. I wish it was that easy. There are seasons where it seems like every sermon I listen to gives me deeper insight and passion, and there are seasons where I can’t seem to focus, can’t seem to relate or just plain feel empty. But, the key is obedience. Obediently seek God and His word. His word does not return void. Practice obedience in your study and worship.
Persistent Thankfulness, Consistent Prayer, and Obedient Worship are three key disciplines I use when I am just feeling like my tank is on E. When I’m struggling and can’t quite seem to kick it, I focus on these three things. Sometimes this works quick, while other times, it takes a looonnnnggg time. There is no quick answer to filling your tank, but to keep pressing on and focusing on Christ. My prayer is that if you are feeling like you are on empty today, that these three things would help encourage you. What are other things you do when your tank is on E?

Thanks for these encouraging words. I’m going to remember them the next time I feel like I’m running on E, which is often. I also like to listen to Christian radio when I’m feeling low.
