With the new year here, I know there are lots of resolutions flying around, some that will stick, and some that will quickly fade into February. Well, I’m here to encourage you to not let your prayer life for your marriage fade. Prayer can come as easy as breathing for some people, while others, it takes lots of discipline and refining. I want you to know that you are not alone if you are struggling with how to pray for your marriage daily. You might be thinking.. struggling? hmm.. I don’t even know where to start. My advice is always to start with thankfulness.
Start With Thankfulness
Start by thanking God for your spouse. God has purposefully gifted your spouse to you. Have you ever viewed your husband as a gift? Think about that for a second. Do you receive your husband as a precious gift from God, or are you constantly complaining or trying to change him? Are you thanking God for your gift or are you telling God it’s not good enough? In James 1:17, we learn that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” So, we should give thanks to the Lord for all the gifts He has given us. Today, tell God thank you for your amazing gift. Your husband is a gift, cherish him.
Your Heart
Then, pray for your heart. I know your thinking wait? I was really thinking about prayer for my husband. Why me? Well, it takes two in your marriage. We can easily slip into a prayer life filled with “God, I’m so frustrated… please change him.. Lord, help him see my point of view…” etc. When you feel that your husband has wronged you with lack of respect, unkindness, irresponsibility, cruelty, or indifference it is hard to not pray this way. However, God considers thoughts of unforgiveness, anger, hatred and revenge to be just as bad. When I have prayed for my husband, especially in hopes to change him, I often find that it is actually me that needs changing. God sees things we do not. He knows the depths of our hearts and struggles. Only He has the power to change your husband in His time and authority. Your role as a wife is NOT to change your husband, but to love him. Pray for your heart that God would work in you as a wife. Pray that you would learn to love your spouse as Christ does. Pray for peace, and humbleness.
For Him
Then pray FOR your husband, not about your husband. Pray for his character, his job, his strengths, his weaknesses, his future, his success… the list goes on and on. Here are also 25 verses to pray over your husband. I absolutely love praying God’s word over my husband. There is so much strength and truth in His words. You can also make a habit of asking your husband how you can be praying for him. This has been huge in our marriage, because it really opens up the lines of communication to your hearts. It might take a few times at first, or you might even get a “ummm… i dunno” but keep trying!
Your Marriage
Next, pray for your marriage. Pray that God with strengthen your marriage. Pray for oneness and for your hearts to be perfectly in sync. Pray for God to be at the center of your marriage. Pray for wisdom in areas you are struggling. Pray for your peace and grace. Pray against anything that would come in between your marriage. Ask God for his guidance and invite him into your marriage. Invite him to fix what needs to be fixed or change what needs to be changed in His timing. Ask him to cultivate romance in your marriage. Just open your heart and talk with God.
End With Thanks
I like to begin and end with thanks. Thank the Lord for everything He is doing in your life and in your marriage. Declare that He is good and perfect and has the power to strengthen your marriage. Thank Him for working in your life and even pray for your prayer life. Pray that God would help you pray.
I hope this truly helps your prayer life for your marriage. I firmly believe in the power of prayer and the ability it has to transform your life and your marriage. God is present; He cares for you and your marriage.
