It’s summer time! Well, I guess not “officially” yet, but it is time to get outdoors and play. Since we have a toddler now, we have found ourselves outside as a family so much more. She loves for us all to go outside together, even if its just for a walk around the neighborhood. I’ll be honest, it has been so nice to take time to stop and just enjoy the outdoors. I think we get so busy sometimes that it is nice to see the world through a toddler’s adventurous mind. Plus, I have so many fond memories of playing outside with my parents. A new survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of TruGreen finds that nearly two thirds of Americans (156 million) report that some of their favorite memories have occurred right in their own yards. Here are 5 Fun Outdoor Family Activities that we are loving right now:
Toddler Scavenger Hunt
This is so fun if you have kids! Make a list of things to find around your yard or neighborhood. This could be simple like “colors” or “shapes” or more complex like type of bugs or plants. Brooke loves smelling all of our flowers and picking up rocks. This is just a fun little activity to help their learning and let them explore.
Sidewalk Chalk
This is great for creativity. You can let your kids express themselves with fun drawings or you can even make up games. We have also found this is a great time to work on colors and letters with Brooke. She really enjoys it, although everything is “blue” or “yellow” right now to her.
Gardening
Yes, I know this can be considered a “chore”, but for kids, its a blast too! Brooke enjoys helping pick weeds around our yard so much. I think she really just loves that she gets to tear them up and do what we are doing.
Blowing Bubbles
Blowing bubbles or playing with our bubble machine is another fun favorite of ours. Brooke is obsessed with bubbles right now and will just run after them. She shrieks and enjoys them so much. I’ll have to admit, even as an adult, there is something magical and fun about bubbles. Plus, they can hold a toddler’s attention for about an hour so thats always a win!
Playing in the Sprinkler
Who doesn’t love playing in the sprinkler? Brooke’s grandparents got her water shoes for her birthday and a fun sprinkler that she loves playing with. She was a little nervous at first to get close to it, but now she thinks its so fun. Plus, it waters our yard at the same time so win-win.
