Most of you know that Kevin and I both have a deep love for baseball. As I was growing up, I was always involved in sports and through high school I kept the score book for the baseball team. Kevin grew up the same way. He spent his days and nights on the baseball field since he could hold a bat. Aside from this, our families just love sports in general. I have so many amazing memories that originated on the field. One being, Kevin and I falling in love as he played college ball. It is just a really special place for us.
Now, as parents, we want to pass on this same love to our children, but we see things through a slightly different lens than when we were younger. We worry about how they are sleeping, we take care of their needs, and we help them make good choices about their food. As a parent, I know I pay way more attention to things I use to never give a second thought. For example, thinking about pesticides in food. However, pesticides don’t only hide in food.
Have you ever thought about the reality of pesticides and other chemicals in parks, playgrounds, ball fields and other community spaces you and your kids play at every day? I know this is an emerging conversation and I am so excited that a brand our family loves, Stonyfield Organic, is paving the way for healthier people and a healthier planet. For their 35th anniversary, they are committing to empowering everyone to make a local change to protect children’s health and the environment through their StonyFIELDs Initiative.
To begin the conversation, Stonyfield recently undertook research that found the majority of parents (69%) are looking to lessen exposure to pesticides in food, but nearly just as many (67%) do not consider sports fields, playgrounds and parks to be an area of concern, despite the fact that most of the playing fields and parks kids play on are treated with a chemical cocktail of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. Today, 68% of parents are more likely to buy a product labeled organic, their primary reason being to avoid pesticides, but Stonyfield believes food is just one part of the equation.
