I still remember when we brought our firstborn, Brooke, home from the hospital. Everything was so new, exciting and scary all at the same time. I would wonder if she was getting enough milk, if we had her swaddled right, if she was sleeping good and even if I was giving her a good enough bath. I am pretty sure I googled every little thing. A bath sounds simple enough, but when you are staring at your new little 6-7 pound baby, suddenly, you freeze up. Here are 5 Newborn Bath Tips:
Choose Your Products
Decide which baby products your are going to use and head to your local H-E-B to pick them up. Dove, the personal care brand you trust for yourself now has a new line for your baby called Baby Dove. We have tried out their Baby Dove Rich Moisture Tip to Toe, Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion, and Baby Dove Rich Moisture Bar so far and love them! Baby’s skin loses moisture up to 5 times faster than yours and Dove goes beyond mild and gentle to replenish essential moisture & nutrients. It is so important to keep your baby’s skin moisturized and you can be confident it getting the best moisture with Baby Dove.
Prepare Your Space
I’ll be honest, bathing a newborn can be stressful if they aren’t used to the water yet or don’t enjoy bath time. Your stress level might be higher with a crying baby and slippery hands, so I encourage you to prepare your bath space beforehand. Make sure you have all of your bath time essentials ready and easily available. I recommend having a baby bathtub, wash towel, towel, Baby Dove Rich Moisture Tip to Toe, Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion, hair comb, new outfit, and a diaper handy.
Sponge Bath Until Cord Falls Off
You should give your baby a sponge bath until their cord falls off. You can do this by gently using a wash cloth to wash your baby one area at a time. We did this in our sink. We put the baby bathtub in the sink, wrapped our baby in a towel to keep them warm, then would wash an arm – dry it, wash the other arm – dry it, etc until our baby was fully bathed. If you accidentally get their cord wet, don’t fret, just pat it dry softly with a towel.
How often does my baby need a bath?
This is a great question that many new parents want answered. We gave our babies baths every other day to ensure that their skin wasn’t getting too dried out. I know a lot of pediatricians recommend bathing newborns at least 2-3 times per week.
How do I give my baby a bath?
First, you should put your baby bath in the tub (or sink) and fill the tub with about 2 inches of warm water. Remember that your baby’s skin is more sensitive than yours so be sure not to get the water too hot. Make sure you have all of your essentials like we talked about above and place your baby in their bath. Start by placing a warm wash cloth on their stomach to keep them from getting chilled, then proceed to wash their body. After I wash their body, I like to re-wet the wash cloth on their stomach to keep them warm. I then wash my baby’s hair and rinse all of the soap off. Next, I carefully take my baby out of the bath and place them on a towel. I recommend drying them off and putting a diaper on really fast to prevent them from peeing or pooping on their towel due to the cold air. After this, I put Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion all over their body and then it is pajama time!
Hopefully I helped answer a few questions you might have had and helped you feel prepared for your baby’s bath. Whether it’s tear-free tip to toe wash during baby bath time, or a soothing lotion afterwards, Baby Dove gives you confidence that you’re providing the best care for your baby’s skin, so head to H-E-B and grab your bath time essentials.
