You may have noticed that I have been talking about cold and flu season a lot this year. As a mom of two now, sickness and being prepared is on my mind a lot. When I was a first time mom with Brooke, google was my best friend when she was sick; I appreciated articles like this one from bloggers I trusted about what to do in those scary mom moments. Brooke was sick a lot in her first year of life, so I like to think that made me more experienced for Baby Kevin. She had countless ear infections, stomach bugs and RSV twice. And, the times I remember the most is when I felt unprepared as a mom. I still remember the helpless feeling, so I like to share what I have learned to help other moms feel more prepared.
Stock Up
Stock up on essentials right now when your child isn’t sick. Trust me, you don’t want to be those parents at the store at 2am. It is NOT fun. It is awful actually. Your baby is crying, doesn’t feel good and you have to make them wait longer by going to the store. Its a terrible feeling. I highly suggest stocking up on Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is one of the most recommended non-prescription medications by healthcare professionals – including pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners – for temporary fever reduction and relief of minor aches and pain in infants and children.
FeverAll® is the only national brand of acetaminophen in suppository form and is available in three strengths for children from 6 months to 12 years of age. Wait… yes I just said suppository…here is the kicker: This type of medicine is important to stock up on as well, because it permits the administration of fever and pain relieving medicine to children who cannot take medication by mouth due to illness/vomiting, or fussiness, for those who don’t like taking liquid medication or who have other health issues. It also allows for accurate dosing instead of measuring liquid as your baby spits half of it out. For more information on FeverAll and current coupon offers, visit FeverAll.com
Be Prepared With Facts
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, fever in babies begins at 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. This is important to know, so that you can track when your baby really has a fever. Also, you may not know this, but using a digital rectal thermometer will provide the most accurate reading of a baby’s temperature. You might be thinking, I’ll just stick with my forehead thermometer and we have one too that I use for the majority of our sicknesses; however, be prepared.
When Brooke had RSV the first time, her temperature quickly rose from 100.4 to 104.5. I immediately called my doctors office and they advised that this was the most accurate way to get a true temperature reading and expressed how important it was to know the the REAL number. Friends, when your baby’s temperature gets this high, you want immense accuracy. I’ve been there, its terrifying. Of course, call your physician about any concerns with fever in your child. Don’t Freak Out
This step is important, your baby already feels bad, so don’t freak out. Stay calm and be fully prepared to help them and comfort them. It is really easy to get emotional, especially on their first fever, so just focus on your baby and it will all be okay.
Listen To Your Doctor
Contact your doctor when necessary and listen to their advice. They are professionals for a reason and they know what to do. Our doctors office even had a nurses line that would advise you on if you should come in for an appointment if you were unsure. This was so helpful!
Put Everything Else On Hold
Yes, put your life on hold when your baby is sick. Don’t worry about work, don’t worry about laundry or your house. Focus on your baby and giving them attention and love. Soak up those cuddles and soak it all in. They are only little for a little while.
At the end of the day, all you can do is #BeFeverReady by gaining knowledge, stocking your cabinet and just loving on your baby. You can find FeverAll at your local Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart stores.
