As a first time new mom, I was beyond exhausted. Brooke ate every 3 hours at first, so I was barely getting 2 hours of sleep at a time. Then, when we finally got to bring her home from the NICU, I found myself constantly waking up in the night to check on her. I worried, a lot, so my 2 hours of sleep in between feeds quickly dwindled downward.
By 6 weeks old, Brooke was sleeping a solid 6 hours at night, so we transitioned her to her crib in her room. At this point, my worry only grew. At every sound on the monitor, I would wake up and need to check on her. And, when there was silence, I would still wake up and watch for her chest to go up and down to ensure she was breathing. I had so much worry and fear that it effected my sleep. I gradually got more sleep as she began to get older and more mobile.
However, with our new baby Kev Kev, the experience has been completely different. While his NICU stay was shorter than Brooke’s, he had a condition called TTN, which is essential fluid on his lungs. This cleared up in less than 24 hours, however, it brought me more worry about his breathing. They found his condition in the newborn nursery because of wheezing he was having, so when we went home, I would worry if his breathing seemed different.
Then, we received the Owlet Smart Sock 2. I heard about this product after Brooke was born, but didn’t think it was a “necessity”. Wow, was I wrong! The Owlet has given me complete peace of mind when Kev Kev is sleeping. It tracks his oxygen levels and heart rate. This information is then transmitted to my phone via a base station that is designed to notify me with lights and sounds if these numbers fall outside of preset zones.
I can’t express my gratitude enough for this type of technology. The design and product has honestly changed my life as a mom. Since Kev Kev sleeps 5-6 hours at night, with the Owlet, I can too. Also, they recently released the brand new Owlet Smart Sock 2! It’s now better than ever, designed by parents, for parents. It has:
- Improved bluetooth range (up to a 12X increase) between sock and base station – 100 feet
- New design with a more secure fit
- Enhanced Smartphone App with better user experience
- Advancements in firmware and hardware to reduce false notifications
- Updated fabric sock, that can now be worn on either foot
It is worth every penny as a new mom to have peace of mind and be able to get much needed sleep. If you aren’t a mom yet, keep this in mind or even remember that it is the perfect shower gift.
