I couldn’t close out the month of September without mentioning that it is Baby Safety Month. If you have been around Simply Clarke for a while, you know that have a huge LOVE for buybuy BABY. They have such an amazingly, knowledgable staff and truly care – from their step stools for toddlers in the bathroom, to their decked out nursing room in store. They also care about Baby Safety Month and have put it on the forefront of their attention this month. As a mom of two, safety is extremely important to me. I know for me, I feel like i’m constantly managing my kids safety in terms of their play spaces, car safety, sleep safety, bath safety and even what is in their food! There are dangers all around us and I know it is easy to think of “safety” as just baby-proofing your home – which is amazing, but not the whole picture. Here are my top 5 Tips to Baby Safety that we have put into place for our family:
Home Safety
The first thing my mind typically goes to when hearing “baby safety” is baby-proofing your home. Making sure that your baby has a safe environment is so important for your sanity and of course, your baby overall. In this post a few years ago, I shared our 7 must haves for baby-proofing including a pressure mounted baby gate (if you have stairs in your house), a great baby monitor, cabinet latches, drawer latches, and outlet covers. We love having a great monitor in each of our kids room – even now as toddlers, we can ensure they are playing safe. Along with these great products, it is a good idea to ensure all breakables are out of reach and all cleaning supplies are out of reach.
Car Safety
Car Safety is the next thing that comes to mind when I think of Safety month. We were extremely involved in the process of deciding our car seats. I did a lot of research on safety and recently, I even found a new car seat that is using cutting edge technology to help reduce the number of infants left in cars. The Cybex Sirona M Sensorsafe 2.0 Convertible Car Seat is amazing and no i’m not getting paid to say that (read my review here)! You plug the sensorsafe device into a spot in your car and each time the car turns off, a chime reminds you to unbuckle your child. This also corresponds with an app that will notify your phone if your child is left in the car and you walk away from the vehicle. So, essentially, when thinking about about car safety – not only think about the safety of the actual seat, but added benefits like this to help ensure overall safety.
Sleep Safety
I know sleep safety is heavily debated and changes often, however, it is so important like I have mentioned to think about the overall picture of safety. Keeping a clear crib, putting your baby on their back to sleep and having a great monitor are all good ideas. Aside from the traditional baby monitor, you can also now have the added safety of an Owlet Smart Sock Baby Monitor. After having two NICU babies, I loved having the added assurance of the Owlet – you can read more about our Owlet story here.
Bath Time Safety
Bath time is such a fun time in our house. My kiddos LOVE splashing around in the water and playing with toys. However, I still remember the days of being super nervous giving my newborn a bath. In all honesty, with my first baby, we had a horrible baby bath. It was not stable, I constantly worried about it holding our baby safely and I should have thrown it in the trash and bought a different one. I say to let you know I have tired many after our second baby, and found the best baby bath tub in our opinion in terms of safety. Another great item is a facet cover. I know they aren’t the most atheistically pleasing additions to your bathroom, but they are so worth it! Along with this, grip dots can help make your tub less slippery and a lot safer. With baby Kevin, we also used a bath seat. With two babies, using a bath seat helped me ensure Baby Kevin was safe and wouldn’t slip around.
Food Safety
Now, the last item on the list today, Food Safety. You might be scratching your head slightly at this one, but what goes into your baby’s body matters. From choosing the right formula to deciding on a baby food brand. I talk about it often, but when Brooke started baby food I was so overwhelmed. There were so many brands, and so many combinations of food. I had no idea what was best. I did a lot of research to find the best, organic baby food on the market. Then, with our second baby, Little Kevin. I tested the taste theory as well. Brooke took a bite of each baby food pouch and the most “natural”, “food like” taste that she liked was Happy Baby. While this was our favorite brand, I so encourage you to do your research and find the best pick for your family!
Overall, there are so many choices when it comes to parenting that affect our babies safety. If you are reading this, then you are already doing your research and trying to think of all angles to ensure your baby is happy, healthy and safe. I hope this helped you maybe think of safety at a different angle and I hope you found a great new buy buy BABY product. Of course, if you have any questions, you can send me a quick email or head to your local buy buy BABY and talk to one of their knowledge staff members!
