Nursing is a whole new world. Honestly, the one thing I was super nervous about, besides birth, was nursing. It just sounded painful and time-consuming. However, little did I know it would be the most amazing thing ever. I was very fortunate to have lactation consultants every day while Brooke was in NICU. They really helped give us a great start, and Brooke did really awesome from the beginning. But, there is way more to nursing than just technique. You have to be aware of everything you are putting in your body, similar to how you were during pregnancy.
Here are 5 tips I have on staying healthy while nursing:
1. Stay Hydrated
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Just as drinking water is important when you are pregnant, it is important while you are nursing as well. Professionals suggest drinking an 8oz glass of water each time you nurse. While drinking water shouldn’t effect your actual supply of milk, it will effect you. Lack of the appropriate amount of water is proven to increase your fatigue and can I just say as a new mom, you don’t need another thing adding to your fatigue.
2. Nutrition
Baby eats what you eat. This is where I struggle the most. If we are being honest, Kevin and I don’t eat very healthy at all, so I have had to make some adjustments to my eating habits. I try to make sure I am getting a good amount of protein, vitamins, fruits and vegetables each day.
3. Get Energy
Need a pick me up when a nap is not a possibility? While you’re pregnant or nursing, coffee or energy drinks may be a no-no. That’s why healthy mama® brand worked with nutritionists to develop Boost it Up!™ a specially formulated energy drink for pregnant and nursing mamas that you can trust. Enjoy a delicious lift with Boost It Up!™ the expert developed energy drink that’s packed with protein, B-vitamins, fiber and electrolytes. It’s delicious, refreshing and hydrating too! You can find Boost it Up!™ in the feminine section at Target in a beautiful display of all things healthy for mommy.
4. Watch Medications
Nursing can bring all sorts of pesky pains in places you never thought possible. Get relief that helps eliminate headaches, backaches, muscular aches, breast tenderness, mastitis pain and more! It reduces fevers and is gentle on your stomach, leaving you with one less worry. So Shake that Ache!™ today!
5. Vitamins
Pre-natal vitamins are needed before, during and after pregnancy. Be Well Rounded!™ prenatal vitamins from healthy mama® keep baby well nourished! The vitamin is FD&C dye-free, contains a special iron blend which is more tolerable, reducing the occurrence of constipation and gastric upset due to increased iron intake. The DHA supplement has a natural enteric coating which helps deliver higher levels of Omega-3 and eliminates that dreaded fish smell.
If you can’t tell, I love healthy mama®. They are helping to create a new category at Target for Prenatal/Postnatal Care by uniting products under one brand. I was constantly googling what I could and couldn’t take or eat while pregnant and I do the same now that I am nursing. However, healthy mama® is committed to making it simple for you to find the safest solutions, because a healthy baby starts with a healthy mama®.
