Bringing your new baby home from the hospital can be scary and full of unknowns, but also so amazing and relaxing. Here are my Top 6 Postpartum Health Tips to help your experience be as smooth as possible!
Sleep when you can! You will most likely resemble a walking zombie the first two weeks. Adjusting to a new little one is a big task, however, your body will adjust to waking up every three hours and you will get use to your “new normal” soon. Don’t get discouraged! Remember to take a nap or two during the day if you can.
It is so important to stay hydrated. It is amazing what simple water can do for you. Staying hydrated is another thing that helps you feel better, plus you will need to if you are breastfeeding or on any medications. I am an avid water drinker, so this comes natural for me, but I know it doesn’t for most people. If it doesn’t come natural for you, maybe try getting a new water bottle or something fun to help incentivize you.
Accepting help is crucial for your health the first few weeks. When our daughter Brooke was born, we had my mom stay with us the first week, then Kevin’s mom, and then, my mom came back for week three. They drove us to appointments, made sure we had groceries, cooked dinner, helped clean our house, helped with Brooke and so much more. We also had friends offer to bring over dinner. Accept as much help as you need and don’t be afraid to ask for help either. Also be sure to say “no” when you need to as well and don’t feel bad!
Eat (a lot)
Try not to worry too much about the number on the scale the first few months. You just had a baby. Tell yourself that over and over. You need to make sure you are eating healthy and enough food for you and baby, if you are breastfeeding. You need a lot more calories if your breastfeeding so don’t skip meals and be sure to snack as well.
Stock Up on Gum
Yes, stock up! You will have lots of guests coming over and be at appointments. I went through a lot of gum just making sure I was “fresh”. When your mouth feels clean and fresh from Orbit® gum, you feel more confident and ready to make the most of your moments. On top of that, a key part of health and wellness is all about seeking balance through mindful consumption. Wrigley’s #ChewToABetterYou campaign encourages consumers to incorporate sugar free gum into their Health and Wellness routine to promote balance through mindful consumption. Gum is always a good choice as people pursue a balanced lifestyle!
Take it slow
Relax. Sleep in. Cuddle with your baby. Enjoy these weeks. I know they pass by so extremely fast. Don’t worry if it takes you three days to check two things off of your to-do list. These moments are precious and you won’t get the back. Plus, your body is healing, listen to it.
