Today is the last post in my Shop Small for Christmas Series! That means Christmas is almost here and you need to get your online orders placed ASAP! Today I want to introduce you to Second Stitch to the Right. They have these adorable dalmatian leggings you see Brooke featured wearing (they have other adorable prints too!). They also have quilts, crib sheets, changing pads, swaddles, beanies and blankets! Here is a little bit more about Second Stitch to the Right in interview style with owner Clare:
How did you get your shop started?
A few years back, as my kids were starting to grow up and leave on their own, I started contemplating what I wanted to do (as I had been a stay-at-home mom for 25 years). I thought of many careers, but in the end I wanted to do something I was passionate about and knew I was good at. Quilting & sewing was something I had been taught by my grandmother at a young age & became the craft I loved the most. It became clear that I should open my shop after my grandchildren were born & I made a quilt. It has just grown from there!
What is the hardest part of owning a shop?
Owning your own business is never a 9-5 job. I’m constantly doing something, creating something, thinking of creating something, paperwork, etc., etc., but I love it!!!
What is one thing unique about you?
I’m left-handed & dyslexic – makes for an interesting combination! Haha!
What is the best part of owning a shop?
The ability to be flexible. Being my own boss & able to come & go as I please!! (for the most part)
How did you get your shop name?
I wanted it to be something that was personal to me & meant something. Peter Pan was always my favorite childhood Disney movie. “The second star to the right, Shines in the night for you, To tell you that the dreams you plan, Really can come true” (lyrics from Peter Pan). Pretty much says it all!! It’s also the directions to Neverland, where you never grow-up! Sounds good to me!! :)) My shop name is a play on this!!
What is one way that you keep organized?
I am a naturally organized person. If I had to say one thing, I’d say – if there is something you can do NOW, do it!! Don’t put it off!!
How do you balance family life and work life?
That’s tough given my comments about owning your own business. However, I’d say to make a point to have set business hours. While this isn’t always possible, I try to make it a general rule. I try to put everything aside while with family and vice-versa.
